This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments you’ll want to remember forever. Having a photographer there ensures:
I’ve photographed proposals at the Conservatory and love helping couples plan the moment so it feels seamless. A photographer isn’t just someone holding a camera. They’re also your secret planner, cheerleader, and memory-keeper.
I’ve photographed many love stories, but Joshua and Abby’s Garfield Park Conservatory proposal had all the ingredients of something truly special.
Joshua and Abby’s love story began in medical school in South Carolina. Joshua admits he was “a little clueless” at first and let eight whole months pass before finally asking Abby out. In the end, they both decided medical school wasn’t the right path for them, but each other was.
When it came time to propose, Joshua wanted it to be more than a simple “yes.” He dreamed of having both of their parents and siblings there to celebrate. But first, he had to get Abby from Charleston to Chicago without giving anything away. His cover story? They’d been invited to a distant cousin’s wedding. Since it was a cousin he hadn’t seen in years and was supposed to be a small gathering, Abby didn’t think twice.
On the “wedding” day, they stopped at Garfield Park Conservatory for some pre-ceremony family photos with the bride and groom. As they stepped into the lush, dreamy Fern Room, Joshua dropped to one knee and asked Abby to marry him. She answered, “YES!” followed by applause from other Conservatory visitors who happened to witness the moment.
Right after the proposal, Joshua gave Abby a beautifully curated “Proposal Journal” filled with highlights from their relationship journey.
But Joshua wasn’t done surprising her yet. As we strolled through the gardens taking engagement photos, I led them into the Show House where both of their families were waiting to surprise Abby. The look on her face said it all.

“Chelsey was a spectacular photographer who really made proposal photos a blast. She was incredibly easy to work with, extremely friendly, and also very flexible! We worked through multiple plans (including adverse weather plans), set up photo permits, and quickly organized all logistics. Her photos are also amazing! We love the aesthetic and can’t recommend her enough. Thank you Chelsey!”
